Uptime checked from several regions, so a false alarm doesn't wake you up

A network problem between us and the client's server, or a firewall that blocks only our address, looks like a site that is down. That is why a site counts as down only when at least two regions see it down.

A monitor that looks from one place gets it wrong.

If every check leaves from the same server, each of its network problems turns into an alert on every site. The same happens when the client's host blocks our IP: the site works for everyone except us.

After a few false alarms at 3 a.m. the team stops looking at them. That is when the real one arrives.

How we confirm an outage.

  1. First check

The main server calls the site at the interval you chose. If the site answers, that's it.

  2. Confirmation from the probes

If the check fails, we ask the probes in other regions. With three regions the majority decides.

  3. Alert or warning

If the site is down from at least two regions, the critical alert goes out. If only the main server fails, after three checks in a row you get a warning: the site doesn't load from every region.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to install the probes myself?

Probes are managed by whoever runs the platform. The file is downloaded with its key from Platform admin > Uptime probes and uploaded to PHP hosting in another region.

What if the site blocks only your server?

The probes see it online, so there's no critical alert. After three checks in a row you get a warning that the site doesn't load from every region, so you can ask the host to unblock the address.
