SSL certificate expiry monitoring, site by site

With an expired certificate the browser covers your client's site with a warning page. It happens even with automatic renewal switched on.

When automatic renewal breaks, nobody says so.

Let's Encrypt and hosting companies renew certificates on their own until something changes: DNS moved, a CDN added, an old certificate uploaded by hand. Then renewal fails and nobody gets told.

Usually you find out when visitors have already seen "Your connection is not private" and your client has already emailed you.

We read the certificate the way a browser does.

  1. TLS connection

Every day we connect to the site and read the certificate it presents, with the whole chain.

  2. Checks

We check the expiry date, issuer, chain and that it matches the domain.

  3. Alert

We warn you two weeks before expiry, with a critical alert in the last week, and at once if the certificate is invalid.

Frequently asked questions

How early does the expiry alert arrive?

Two weeks before, so you have time to find out why renewal didn't run. In the last week it becomes critical, and it is critical from the start if the certificate is invalid.

Does it work with Let's Encrypt and Cloudflare?

Yes. We check the certificate the site actually presents to visitors, whoever issued it.
