API and URL monitoring, beyond the home page

A client's site is more than its home page: a shop API, a booking endpoint, a health check page. Each one can break on its own.

The home page is up and the checkout is down.

Many failures hit one address: the payment gateway callback, the API a mobile app calls, the endpoint behind a form. The home page keeps loading and nobody notices.

Those addresses also need things a home page check does not send, like an authorization header or a POST body.

A monitor shaped on the address.

  1. The request

You choose GET, HEAD or POST, whether to follow redirects, up to 10 headers and a POST body up to 4 KB. Headers and body are stored encrypted.

  2. What counts as down

By default any code from 400 to 599. You can list the codes and ranges that mean "down" for that address.

  3. The answer

Optionally we read a JSON field, by name or position, and compare it with the value you expect, such as status = ok.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the agent for API monitoring?

No. A URL or API monitor needs only the address. It keeps the SSL, DNS and domain checks.

Can I check a private address or localhost?

No. We only call public addresses, and we check the address again after DNS resolution and on every redirect, so a monitor cannot reach a private network.

What do other regions do for these monitors?

Probes in other regions confirm only simple GET checks without headers. For monitors with headers or a body, the confirmation is a second attempt from our main server, so your tokens never leave it.
