Verified backups, and a reminder to test the restore

You find out that a backup doesn't open on the day you need it. With one click we read the backup back from storage and check every part, without touching the site.

Having backups doesn't mean you can restore them.

A truncated archive, a half-written database dump, a lost key: none of these show until you try to restore.

Restore tests are in everyone's best practices, but without a reminder a year goes by and nobody does one.

What we check.

  1. Reading the backup

We download the parts from storage, decrypt them and check each one.

  2. Database

In database dumps we count the tables, to catch an empty or cut-off dump.

  3. Reminder

The site's Backups tab shows "No restore tested for N days" when too long has passed since the last test.

Frequently asked questions

Does verification restore the site somewhere?

No. It reads and checks the backup without restoring it. That is why we remind you to try a real restore now and then, for example on a copy of the site.

Does it work with every database?

Backups and database verification need MySQL or MariaDB.
